Program History

The first SR-AHEC Diabetes and Obesity Medicine Fellowship Graduate August 2016

Program Curriculum

Direct patient care:

  • Work in the outpatient setting seeing complex patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes (referral population). Graduated independence. 

  • Work in the weight loss clinic

  • Longitudinal experience with podiatry, maternal fetal, pediatric endocrinology, ophthalmology (tailored)

  • Consult on the inpatient service for DKA, HONC, complicated medical patients with diabetes

  • Work in a free clinic seeing only patients with diabetes

Didactics:

  • 72 CDs (3 years, 24 per year) of Diabetes Insight (roughly 200 hours) required

  • Weekly meeting with Fellowship Director to review questions

Teaching:

  • Present didactics for FM residents (2 programs), IM residents, EM residents, regional CME program for physicians and pharmacists, CME for hospitalists

Service:

  • Observe diabetes camp at beginning of fellowship

  • Work in diabetes camp at conclusion of fellowship

  • See patients in free clinic every second week

Projects:

  • Work on a scholarly project (e.g. ACT study) or administrative project (e.g. starting DPP) and present results (at minimum a poster presentation)

Conferences:

  • Attend a national ADA Diabetes conference, submit for presentation

Application process/dates
